The Gordon Hotel

The Gordon Hotel in Eugene Oregon, has an art-centric experience. The local art throughout the whole building inspires a comfortable and unique stay. They had a competition for artists to submit their art for a chance to have it printed on a 20 x 80 foot canvas, and then attached to the side of their building facing the 5th Street Public Market. I sent in my art titled, “Coast Valley Cascade” and was in the top three finalist. I was not chosen as the winner, but I was glad when they decided to have it printed in inches instead of feet and hung in the second floor lobby.

I wanted to express in this art that all things are built on pattern grids. The repeating and subtle patterns in nature are so beautiful. I wanted to show my appreciation for the nature here in Oregon.

I started this art, with pencil sketches of shapes that felt natural to me. Next I drew those shapes in Adobe Illustrator and began laying out a scene that represented to me a landscape you would see here in western Oregon.
